Some Key Differences Between Desktops and Laptops

There are a lot of things to consider when you go shopping for a new computer. Should you get a laptop or a desktop? The fact is that for the same price you’ll get a lot more out of a desktop than you will a laptop. If you need portability though, a laptop is the best option. Let’s take a look at a few things that make desktops a better investment overall.

Pricing

I think it’s pretty much common knowledge at this point that laptops cost more than desktops. But have you ever wondered why? Well, there are a number of reasons but one of the big ones is that they cost more to manufacture. When a desktop is put together they don’t have to worry as much about space and cooling issues. Building a laptop takes more precision, and this increases the cost.

Usability and Ergonomic Considerations

Have you ever typed for a long period of time on a laptop? They are not the most comfortable things to work on. This is another area where desktops shine. With all of the additional peripherals you can get you can customize the ergonomics of your home setup. Yes, you can attach external keyboards and other peripherals to a laptop, but then you just have one more item to carry around with you.

Desk Space

When planning the amount of space your computer will take up on your desk, a laptop and desktop take up about the same amount of space. The tower is usually kept under the desk, and so all you have on top of your desk is the keyboard, monitor, and mouse. These items take up about the same amount of space as a laptop, and sometimes even less.

Resolution Problems

Notebook and Laptop displays usually have a fixed resolution. You can change and adjust the settings, but your images and text may not look good. People tend to believe that the higher the resolution number, the better the resolution and the better the picture quality is. A higher screen resolution may cause everything to be too small to be comfortable to read and may not be a good solution for you. A laptop screen is smaller (typically range from 12″ to 17″) than a desktop monitor (typically 19″ or bigger). That is a big difference.

What to Know Before You Build a Desktop PC

While most consumers will be able to get by with a regular desktop PC, there are always those situations where building one on your own may be a better option. What are the reasons that someone would need to build their own? What are the benefits of doing so?

What it comes down to is that there are certain situations where a user needs to have certain needs that cannot be met by a store-bought computer. The problem is that building your own desktop PC is not necessarily an easy thing to do. But the benefit is that the user can decide exactly what they need in their computer in order to build the perfect PC for them.

Desktop PCs are very modular and have uniform components, which allow users to easily find and install new units into the computer. This customizability also lets users design the computer that will cover their needs. Maybe consumer models don’t have enough hard drive space. Perhaps a hardcore gamer can’t find a preconfigured desktop PC that has the sound, graphics, and peripherals really needed to dominate the game. Or maybe the preconfigured models are just too much power for a casual Internet user. In all these situations, building a unique PC might be the answer.

Building a desktop PC from scratch begins with deciding on the processor that is needed. Will it be something simple like a dual-core processor, or will it be stepped up to a quad-core chip to really add some power? Next is the motherboard and memory. Finding the board that will be compatible with the processor and the memory is an important step. Everything will be attached to the motherboard, so it must be the right one for the user’s needs, and it must also be able to accept future upgrades as well.

Another important consideration is drive space. You’ll need to think about what you will be storing on this computer. Make sure you have a large and fast enough drive for your needs.

These are some of the basic components that go into a computer, but there is so much more variety that could be included, from monitors to peripherals to the communications equipment and more. Building a custom desktop is the sure way to make sure that a computer will cover any unique situation.

In all honestly, most consumers will be just fine with a standard desktop. But if you need something more than what the store models offer, you may want to consider building a custom PC.

Avoid Getting More than you Need in a Desktop PC

As you probably well know, there are a lot of options out there for desktop computers. And with all the options, upgrades, and features, it can be very easy for the average consumer to be confused. How do you know what you need and what is just extra fluff?

When you buy a new desktop you need to look at the bigger picture. In case you haven’t notices, prices in general for computers have been steadily dropping over the last couple of years. This also makes it very easy to get confused on what you really need. And the fact is that different users have different needs! Without knowing the features you need you’re likely to buy a bunch of features that you’ll never use.

So before you buy a computer think about what your main uses for it are going to be. Are you going to be doing a lot of gaming? Or is it mainly so you can connect with friends and family via the internet? Are you going to be storing a lot of images and videos on your computer? If you know these details you’ll be able to do a little research before you go to the computer store to find out which features you need. If you’re only going to be doing light work on your computer you don’t need all of the extra features that a gaming or multimedia user would need. For this kind of computer you can probably get something for under $1000.

Then there is the gaming machine – the red hot, bleeding-edge equipment that pumps out unbelievable graphics at unbelievable speeds. These desktop computers are for the serious gamer that is going to be spending many hours a day practicing, playing, and networking. Graphics cards, over-clocked processors, and personalized peripherals are all normal purchases with this kind of machine. They’ll impress friends and neighbors and smoothly run the most intense games on the market, but they will also cost a large amount.

These heavy duty gaming machines can be tempting purchases. But if all you’re going to be doing is using the internet and running office-type applications they are way more than you need. This is why it is so important to really assess your needs before you buy your next desktop. This way you will get the computer you need and nothing more. You’ll spend a lot less doing so as well!
