Is Your drinking Water Safe?
Protecting our health is important and safe drinking water is a vital aspect of good health. It is an essence for a healthy living. Therefore, it becomes very essential to make sure that the water we consume is pure.
Water is used for drinking, cooking, bathing, washing etc. But unfortunately, the water that is supplied to our home contain chemicals, minerals, and metals that are hazardous to your health and can cause serious diseases like cancer and many skin problems.
So, it becomes very necessary to take proper measures for purifying your drinking water. There are a number of water purification options out there for you to choose from that can significantly reduce the level of chemicals, metals, minerals, and other particulates in your drinking water.
The first thing that you should know is how pure is the water in your home taps. There are labs for testing water and once you know that you don’t have safe drinking water there are ways to treat your water to make it safe. The appropriate solution depends on the nature of your contaminants, since there are a variety of water purification systems, each of which addresses different water quality problems.
Built-in water filters utilize several different technologies to combat a wide range of contaminants while some others only use one of these methods. If you are buying a filtration system, consider filtering all incoming water instead of just putting a filter on the tap.
There are carbon filters available that are effective at removing foul tastes and odors from water, as well as fuel products and pesticides. Water Softening Systems solve hard water problems by removing the minerals, especially calcium and magnesium, in your water.
A reverse osmosis (RO) filter is a very effective one. It basically forces water through a membrane which has very fine pores that allow only pure water molecules to pass through. It can be combined with carbon filters and is installed beneath the sink and connected directly to plumbing system.
You can always consult a plumber for installing your water purification system. Safe drinking water is a vital aspect of good health and every one should take good care of it.

Crappie Fishing: An Alternative To Trophy Fishing
It is vital to remember that crappie fishing is a blend between patience and a careful touch on your line.
For those who enjoy fishing but do not want the challenge of difficult trophy fish, crappie fishing may be for you. Like other species of fish, there is tackle best suited for crappie fishing. Ultra light rods are often suggested to see the play of a crappie bite, as these fish have soft bites. Due to their small size, it is suggested that you use either two pound or four pound test. If you are fishing in a region with bass or pike, it is recommended that you go with four pound test to allow you to catch the other fish that may be in the area.
While you still need a fishing license, many areas that support crappie have no limits on the number you can catch. If limits are in place, the numbers that you can bring in are quite high, and many people do not get close to reaching the number of crappie that can be caught. Crappie are small fish with a similar flavor to perch, but tend to be slightly sweeter. Crappie fishing is very common due to how common the fish are.
As pike and walleye may hunt in areas populated with crappie, this can open up other options for you. When crappie fishing, you will typically be targeting the bottom of the area you are fishing. If you are fishing in an area with pike or walleye, you may consider adding extra tackle to your kit to allow you to catch all of the types of fish active in the area. This allow you stock up your fridge and freezer on the fish without as much worries on regulations for the fish.
With fish ranging in the six inch to ten inch range, they provide a decent amount of fight for their size, an important aspect of finding edible sports fish. In many places, the crappie populations have been tagged as too high, with few rules and regulations on the number of crappie that you can take home. Bobbers may be used to keep the lure in the kill zone, which is usually a little above the bottom of the water. Keeping your lure in motion will often help detect a crappie bite and let you land these fish. When you are setting up your line, you will need to adjust your bobbers according to where you are casting, as you will be less effective at fishing for crappie if you keep your line touching the bottom.

Many older homes and some newer homes have a tendency to suffer from all kinds of disasters especially when homeowners are lax on preventive maintenance. The most common damage to a home comes from water. However, homeowners can catch these water problems before they begin and take certain preventive measures to make sure that the damage will not occur once more.
When water damage, which is not like other common home damages, is undetected or is permitted to continue for quite some time, mold and rot have a tendency to occur deep in the homes foundation. Its not uncommon for these damages to occur in places that are hard to reach.
A home washer is often connected to a cold and hot water line. It must be periodically checked to ensure that the lines are running, as they should. Start by moving the washer out from the wall and inspect the hoses and water line ends. Take a look at the joints and fix the leaks you find. This can be done with either duct tape or special glue. If its more difficult than you can handle, be sure to call a professional to take care of the problem.
Its very important to clean and/or replace the filters every three months so that they do not become blocked. Not doing so can lead to the machines malfunction and a large water increase on your bill because of the slow water flow. Be sure to increase these inspections on the filter more often if your area has hard water. While the washer is not running, check the shut off valve for leaks. If youve got one, replace the valve.
When you are checking out the washer machine, be sure to start with the hoses, as they often are the first to cause problems and leak, such as seen with many appliances. Make sure you have four inches of space between the back half of the washer and the water connection. The space you allow will keep the hose from bunching together and bursting in time. If your hoses look old or frayed, replace them. If you want to save money in the long run, use steel braided hoses. If not, youll need to change your hoses at least twice a year.
Your dryer has a ventilation hose that needs to be replaced every two years. However, check it periodically for holes and tears. You may want to check the outside part of the ventilation hose because animals and insects have a tendency to gnaw at it. This can also lead to problems with it. Make sure to look underneath and behind your dryer for lint. By doing this, youll notice if youre having problems with the vent pipe clogging up. Be sure to still check the vent pipe to ensure it is not clogging. You should have the exhaust rather short for the dryer to work, as it should. Your lint trap should be changed often so the dryer will not overheat.
Your utility sink can be source of water problems so make sure to search for water puddles and discoloration, both underneath and behind it. If you notice sunken boards, its indicative of a water problem in the past. If you notice dripping in the trap, found under the sink, it will need to be repaired as soon as possible. Slow draining water means your utility sink has a blocked drain. This will require a professional to take care of.
You can get rid of clogs by using household cleaners but if they fail, dont attempt to fix it yourself. Instead, call in a professional. If a faucet is continuously running or the sink seals are cracked and/or loose, you should replace at once. If your walls are damp or becoming stained, you need to rule internal plumbing leaks. If you find problems, call in a professional as soon as you can to prevent further problems.

Playing it Safe on Your Rocky Mountain Vacation
Nothing is more fun than a Rocky Mountain vacation, so play it safe while you enjoy the great outdoors. Here are a few tips to keep in mind.
Drink lots of water. One of the most common reasons people get sick while vacationing in the Rocky Mountains is dehydration. More water evaporates from your lungs at higher elevations, so your body can become dehydrated quickly. Some people dont feel thirsty, so its important to drink water even if you think you dont need to. When I first moved to Colorado, I could tell I wasnt getting enough water when my nose got stuffy.
Another problem encountered by people enjoying a Rocky Mountain vacation is altitude sickness. This common ailment may cause headaches, nausea, and dizziness. Try less strenuous activities the first few days in the mountains. Drink plenty of water. If you feel worse or develop other problems, descend to lower altitudes. If your condition fails to improve, consult a doctor.
Its always a good idea to keep an eye on the weather, especially when you are in the mountains. Storms can move in quickly and can become quite fierce, with heavy rain, lots of wind, and spectacular lightning. Hike early in the day. Try not to get caught above the tree line, on the summits of mountains, or near isolated trees or large rocks. If you are caught in a storm, crouch down on your heels and wait for the storm to pass.
Speaking of the weather, it pays to be prepared for changing conditions while enjoying a Rocky Mountain vacation. Carry a backpack with rain gear, flashlight with fresh batteries, sunglasses, sunscreen, waterproof matches or other fire starter, extra food and water, extra clothing, pocket knife, first aid kit, compass, and map. Sometimes the storms bring several inches of snow, obscuring the trail. Its easy to become lost in unfamiliar areas, so you should be prepared to wait out any storms.
Its fun to play in the snow on your Rocky Mountain vacation. Our kids have built snowmen on the Continental Divide on the 4th of July on more than one occasion. Snow can remain on the mountains all summer, and the temptation to climb the snowy slopes is often great. Its much safer to stay back from the steep slopes to avoid any danger from avalanches. While avalanches are more common during winter and early spring, a sudden summer snow storm could create the right conditions in some areas of the mountains. Learn more about avalanche safety from staff in Rocky Mountain National Park or visit the Colorado Avalanche Information Center.
The lakes and streams in the Rocky Mountains sparkle like diamonds, and its tempting to wade in or to get a drink of that cold, clear water ” just like in the cowboy movies. Always take your own water from a safe source. The water is very cold and if you fall in, you could develop life-threatening hypothermia in a matter of minutes. Another reason its best not to drink the water is the tiny critter that lives in the water. Giardia can cause diarrhea, cramps, bloating, and weight loss. It is a very unpleasant illness and can leave you feeling under the weather for several weeks.
Some other illnesses that could spoil your Rocky Mountain vacation are plague, Colorado tick fever, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, and Hantavirus. Plague and Hantavirus are transmitted by fleas that live on infected rodents such as ground squirrels. The best way to avoid plague is by not feeding the animals, no matter how cute they are. Ticks are common in the Rocky Mountains, so a good way to avoid tick borne illnesses is to check for ticks after hiking. Remove clothing and look for ticks around sock lines, waist lines, and skin folds. Remove ticks carefully, without squeezing, with tweezers. Be sure to remove all of the mouth parts. If you feel generally unwell or have symptoms such as fever, rash, or muscle pain, consult a doctor as soon as possible.
A Rocky Mountain vacation is hard to beat. Dont let a lack of safety awareness spoil your fun and excitement. Take some time to prepare before you leave home. Educate everyone in your group. Use common sense. Rely on park staff for updates about conditions in the park. You can be safe and have fun if you know what to expect. Joe Dockter http://rockymountainvacation.blogspot.com
